A No.5 jack plane is the workhorse hand plane (about 14 inch / 350 mm long) used for general dimensioning, flattening rough stock and quick stock removal. The lab unit comes sharpened and ready to use, with a cast iron body, hardwood handles and a precision-ground sole.
